Trail Description
Point Atkinson Lighthouse and Shore Pine Point is one of those classic West Vancouver hikes that feels way bigger than its stats. This 3.4 km loop in Lighthouse Park only climbs about 136 m to roughly 89 m, but it packs in old-growth forest, ocean cliffs, and that iconic lighthouse view in just over an hour. It’s rated easy on paper, though many locals would call it easy to moderate once you hit the rockier sections.
The loop winds through tall, mossy trees on mostly clear gravel paths, then ducks onto narrower, rooty, and rocky side trails that lead to Shore Pine Point, Juniper Point, West Beach, and viewpoints of Point Atkinson Lighthouse. Expect short, steep bits and scrambly rock slabs down to the water, with big ocean views toward Vancouver, the Gulf Islands, and the Coast Mountains. There are plenty of spots to sit on warm granite, watch eagles or seals, and just hang out on the rocks with a snack.
Right now, hikers report the Point Atkinson Lighthouse and Shore Pine Point loop as dry, dusty in places, and very rocky, so proper footwear is important, especially on the steeper viewpoints and slippery rock. The trail is not stroller friendly, and some older hikers may find the uneven terrain a bit much, but most people with basic fitness handle it fine. Paid parking at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver is small and fills after late morning on nice days, so aim for before noon, bring water, be ready for changing weather and low clouds, and watch for wildlife like seals, eagles, and the occasional bear sighting in the area.
