Trail Description

Old Forks AKA Mystery DH MTB Trail sits above West Vancouver in the British Columbia North Shore hills and has changed a lot from the old maps. The original Old Forks line shown on many apps has been brushed over and closed, and the high-speed Mystery Downhill section is still bikes-only. What you actually get now is a short, mellow forest climb and out-and-back hike on the new Old Forks route, with very little elevation gain and a relaxed feel.

The updated Old Forks Trail is about 1.6 km with only around 8 m of gain, topping out near 773 m, so it feels more like a forest stroll than a grind. You’ll be walking under classic West Vancouver second-growth forest, with mossy ground, roots, and that damp coastal air, plus the occasional view break through the trees if the weather cooperates. It’s still a popular mountain biking zone, so expect to see riders on the climbing route but far fewer people than on the main Cypress and Grouse hiking trails.

Recent reports are clear: ignore the old GPS line and stay off Mystery Downhill if you’re on foot, as that section remains a designated bike-only descent with jumps and fast traffic. Follow the new, well-marked Old Forks Trail instead for a safe, straightforward out-and-back hike. The area is usually best from late spring through fall when the trail is clear of snow, and plan for wet roots and mud after rain; bring decent footwear, keep your ears open for bikes, and don’t rely on outdated maps that still show the old route or the blocked lower section near the former Marr Creek crossing.
