Trail Description

Deeks Bluff via Howe Sound Crest Trail is a short but punchy out-and-back hike just north of Lions Bay, off the Sea to Sky Highway, often grouped with West Vancouver hikes. At 7.7 km with about 460 m of gain, it’s a solid moderate outing that most people wrap up in around three hours. It’s a good choice if you want real elevation, a viewpoint over Howe Sound, and far fewer people than the classic West Van hotspots.

The trail climbs quickly from the highway noise into quiet forest, weaving through mossy sections, rocky stretches, and what feels like a dry creek bed in places. Expect a mix of gravel, loose rock, and a few short steeper pitches broken up by flatter sections, plus some small waterfalls and seasonal flowers to keep it interesting. The bluff itself has a cozy bench and a partial but still rewarding view over Howe Sound and the islands, though trees are slowly closing in around the outlook.

Recent hikers on Deeks Bluff via Howe Sound Crest Trail report a well-marked route with clear tree markers and almost no need for bushwhacking, but you should be ready for mud, big puddles, and a few swampy or flooded patches, especially in shoulder season. Waterproof boots make life easier, and there’s no bathroom at the trailhead, so plan ahead. Parking is usually straightforward with a decent-sized lot, and it’s often quiet, especially mornings and weekdays, but keep wildlife in mind as there have been cougar and bobcat sightings. This trail works well from spring through late fall, and if you want more later on, it’s a natural warm-up for tackling Deeks Lake and the bigger Howe Sound Crest objectives.
