Trail Description
Centennial Trail in Lions Bay, just north of West Vancouver, is a short, easy out-and-back that gives you big views for very little effort. At 3.9 km with only about 107 m of gain, it usually takes around an hour, making it a solid choice for a quick leg-stretcher off the Sea to Sky Highway. Expect a mix of forest walking, ocean and mountain viewpoints, and a few side spurs to explore if you’ve got extra time.
The trail follows above Highway 99, so you’ll hear traffic for most of the way, even though it’s usually below your line of sight. In return, you get multiple viewpoints over Howe Sound and the coastal mountains, plus a couple of small waterfalls and creek crossings that break up the walk. The path is mostly shaded and cool, with a few short, steeper and narrower sections where you’ll want to watch your footing, especially near drop-offs with no railings.
Recent hikers report that the final 25% of Centennial Trail is currently blocked off, so don’t be surprised if you can’t reach the very end. There’s paid parking near the trailhead and limited free spots by the municipal building and school; some people prefer starting via the “32 Steps” access, which links directly into the trail and avoids walking on the road. Dogs are allowed and often off leash, the route is well marked with signs and yellow triangles, and the shaded forest makes this a comfortable, easy outing in almost any season, as long as you’re fine with steady highway noise in the background.
