Trail Description

Black Mountain Loop in West Vancouver is one of those short, punchy hikes that gives you a lot in just over 5 km. The loop climbs about 358 m to around 1,224 m, so it feels like a proper workout, but most reasonably active hikers can knock it off in about two hours. It’s a good option if you want classic Cypress Provincial Park views without committing to a full-day grind.

The climb from the Cypress parking lot is steady and often feels steeper than the stats suggest, with loose rocks and gravel underfoot and a few damp, running sections after rain or snowmelt. Once you’re on the plateau, the Black Mountain Loop links the north and south peaks and swings by Cabin Lake, with views out to Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast, and the North Shore mountains from the North Peak if you take the short detour. Cabin Lake is a highlight and a popular swimming spot on hot days, and the area around the rocky north summit is fun to wander a bit off the main path if you’re comfortable on uneven terrain.

Recent hikers report muddy patches, lingering snow in early season, and running water on the way up, plus some icy boardwalks when temperatures drop, so proper footwear is important and microspikes help in shoulder season. Bugs are a recurring theme near the top and around Cabin Lake, especially late spring through mid-summer, so bring spray and consider a head net if they drive you crazy. The lower access trail can be dusty, exposed, and crowded in summer with “gift shop” traffic from Cypress, so go early or in the fall for a quieter loop, carry extra water, and plan a quick dip in Cabin Lake if the weather cooperates.
