Trail Description

First Lake via Baden-Powell Trail is one of those West Vancouver hikes that feels rewarding without beating you up. This 8.5 km out-and-back from Cypress Bowl hovers around 1000 metres the whole way, with only about 318 metres of gentle gain, so it stays in the easy category for most people and usually takes around two and a half hours. It’s a solid option if you want a “real” mountain trail without big climbs or sketchy exposure.

The Baden-Powell section out of Cypress starts you off in classic North Shore old growth, with big trees, soft tread, and plenty of shade. As you get closer to the halfway point, the forest opens up, the trail gets more sun, and you’ll pass a series of small lakes and ponds if you’re up for tiny side detours. First Lake itself is a calm little spot with picnic tables right by the water, making it an easy place to linger before turning around.

Recent hikers report that the First Lake via Baden-Powell Trail can get very wet and even flooded in sections, especially around October and during shoulder seasons. Expect creek crossings without bridges and flowing water that makes waterproof boots a smart call; experienced hikers are rock-hopping them, but this is not a flip-flop or casual sneaker outing. The trail is popular but not crowded, and it’s best from summer into late fall, before snow and seasonal closures around Cypress Mountain start to kick in; always check current conditions with BC Parks or Cypress before you go.
