Trail Description

Eagle Bluffs via Black Mountain Trail in West Vancouver is one of those hikes that makes you work right out of the gate, then pays you back hard at the viewpoint. It’s a 7.9 km out-and-back from Cypress Mountain with about 437 m of gain, usually taking around 3 hours, but new hikers often take a bit longer with breaks. Rated moderate, it’s very doable if you’re reasonably active, but don’t underestimate that first climb.

The trail starts with a steep grind for the first 45 minutes to an hour, gaining most of the elevation as you climb through forest and ski runs toward the Black Mountain plateau. The path is rocky with loose gravel and very few flat sections, but you get a nice breather at the first high point and the small lakes, which are especially cool when they’re frozen over. From there, Eagle Bluffs via Black Mountain Trail rolls through forest, past ponds and viewpoints, before opening up to a wide rocky perch looking out over Howe Sound, Bowen Island, Horseshoe Bay, and the Vancouver skyline.

Recent hikers report the route as easy to follow but often wet, muddy, and full of roots, puddles, and some slippery bridges, especially after rain. Good hiking boots are a must, poles are highly recommended for the steep first and last 2 km, and in colder months microspikes help with icy patches around the lakes. Expect snow and ice in winter and early spring, busier crowds on sunny weekends and holidays, and curious birds and chipmunks at the bluff—enjoy them, but don’t feed the wildlife.
