Trail Description

Brunswick Lake via Howe Sound Crest Trail is one of those North Shore grinds that really makes you earn the payoff. Starting from Lions Bay, just north of West Vancouver, this 17.9 km out-and-back with around 1,686 m of gain is rated very difficult for good reason. It’s long, steep, and exposed in sections, but the alpine lake and big Howe Sound views make it a classic for strong hikers.

The route follows the Mount Brunswick trail before branching onto the Howe Sound Crest Trail toward Brunswick Lake, topping out around 1,515 m. The climb is relentless for the first three quarters, with serious inclines and some light scrambling, then eases off as you traverse toward the lake. The final stretch drops into a gorgeous basin with clear water, mountain walls, and a busy but scenic camping area where many people jump in for a cold swim.

Recent hikers report super dry, slippery dirt lower down in late summer and lingering snow and steep snow slopes near the lake well into July, where spikes, gaiters, and poles are strongly recommended. Earlier in the season, deep snow has turned people around and even triggered search and rescue calls, so if you don’t have traction and solid skills, don’t push it. Plan for more like 5–8 hours round trip depending on pace and pack weight, bring at least 3–4 L of water and refill at streams near the lake, arrive early for parking, and remember the pay machine doesn’t take tap and cell service is spotty for PayByPhone.
