Trail Description

Blue Gentian Lake Loop via Millstream Park in West Vancouver is one of those North Shore hikes that feels way more “deep forest adventure” than its stats suggest. At 7.2 km with about 447 m of gain and a high point around 820 m, it’s solidly moderate, but the steady grade makes it very doable for anyone with a bit of fitness. You’re mostly in the trees the whole way, so it’s a good call even on hot or wet days.

The loop usually climbs via Brothers Creek, then swings past Blue Gentian Lake before dropping back on the Baden Powell Trail. The climb is consistent rather than brutal, but the trail is rough and technical in spots, with roots that honestly feel like natural staircases and rocky sections if you choose the clockwise direction. Expect a very green corridor, flowing water close by, mini waterfalls, big old trees, and a quiet little lake at the top; if you have time, the short detour to Lost Lake adds a surprisingly calm side trip.

Right now, reviews say trail maintenance is good, but conditions change a lot by season. Fall and winter bring snow quickly once you start gaining elevation, and by Blue Gentian Lake it can be deep, hiding bridges and boardwalks and making the loop around the lake sketchy without spikes or snowshoes; many people turn it into an out-and-back in heavier snow. In the shoulder seasons and after rain, expect mud, big puddles, slick roots, and some flooded sections, so waterproof boots and careful foot placement matter. From roughly May to early fall, the Blue Gentian Lake Loop via Millstream Park is usually snow free, well marked, and a great choice for a quieter North Shore workout with steady climbing and easy parking.
