Trail Description
Shell Road Trail in Richmond, BC is about as straightforward as it gets: a dead-flat, 10.6 km out-and-back along an old rail corridor that’s now a mixed-use path. With only 15 m of elevation gain and an average time of around 1 hour 55 minutes, it’s more of a steady urban walk or training route than a wilderness escape.
The Shell Road Trail runs in a long, almost perfectly straight line beside the active railway, with brush and low vegetation on both sides. The surface is a mix of firm gravel and concrete, so it’s smooth and fast for walking, running, or casual cycling, with a few road crossings breaking up the rhythm. You won’t get big views or dramatic scenery here, but you do get a clear, open corridor that’s easy to follow and simple to navigate.
Current reports say the path is in excellent condition, making it popular with runners looking for a flat tempo route and locals out with their dogs. Because it parallels the tracks and roads, expect traffic noise, some off-leash dogs, and those road crossings to slow you down a bit. Shell Road Trail is open year-round in Richmond, and its low elevation means it stays usable most days, though it can be windy and exposed, so dress for the weather and bring water since there’s little shade or amenities along the way.
