Trail Description
West Dyke Trail in Richmond, BC is the city’s version of the seawall: long, flat, wide open, and right by the water. This 11.9 km out-and-back route has only 29 m of elevation gain and tops out around 7 m, so it’s more of a relaxed outing than a grind, usually taking just over two hours at a steady walking pace. It’s an easy way to stretch your legs, get a bit of sea air, and link a walk with food and exploring in Steveston.
The trail is a straight gravel dyke path with the Strait of Georgia and active waterways on one side and striking Richmond homes and farmland on the other. Views are big and open: mountains to the north, marine birds working the shoreline, planes coming and going, and wide sunsets that make evening walks and bike rides especially rewarding. Along the way, you can connect into Steveston’s heritage spots like the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Fisherman’s Wharf, then grab fish and chips before heading back.
West Dyke Trail is very easy underfoot and well used by walkers, runners, and cyclists, with no road crossings and decent access to washrooms and water fountains. There is essentially zero shade, so sun protection, water, and a hat are important on bright days, and the wind can feel cool off the water. Expect some puddles after rain, rare but possible coyote sightings, and seasonal mushrooms along the edges; the route stays accessible year-round, with fall evenings and clear winter days often giving the best light and least crowding.
