Trail Description
Iona Jetty in Richmond, BC is less of a traditional “hike” and more of a long, straight walk into the ocean, with big sky and constant action to keep it interesting. The route is 8.2 km out-and-back, dead flat with only 21 m of gain, and usually takes around an hour and a half at a relaxed pace. It’s rated very easy, so it’s a solid choice for families, casual walkers, runners, and anyone just looking to stretch their legs by the water.
The Iona Jetty trail feels like a concrete sidewalk stretching into the Strait of Georgia, with water on both sides, mudflats, and views back to the North Shore mountains. You’ll likely see planes taking off and landing at YVR right overhead, plus herons, shorebirds, and the odd bald eagle or otter if you’re lucky. Sunsets here are the main event, with huge colours over the water, but even daytime walks have a calm, open feel that’s very different from forested North Shore trails.
Right now, the last 30 metres and the viewing platform at the very end of Iona Jetty are gated off, and there’s little to no signage about it, so don’t be surprised when you can’t reach the true tip. Expect strong wind, no shade, and a stone and gravel surface that can feel longer than the stats suggest, so bring layers, sunglasses, and decent shoes. Parts of the park allow dogs off leash, but check local signs, and be aware there’s some covered seating on the jetty that can smell pretty rough. The trail is open year-round and works in any season, but fall and clear summer evenings are the sweet spot for sunsets and bird and plane watching without extreme heat.
