Trail Description

Iona Beach Trail in Richmond is a super easy 5 km loop that feels more like a relaxed wander than a workout. With only about 26 m of elevation gain and a max height of around 10 m, it’s basically flat, open, and all about the wide skies and water views rather than climbing. Most people finish it in under an hour, but it’s the kind of place you slow down for sunset or bird watching.

The loop at Iona Beach Park takes you along sandy and muddy paths, out by the Fraser River and the edge of Sturgeon Bank. You get big open views, passing wetlands and shoreline, with planes coming and going from YVR and lots of bird activity if you pay attention. Some locals still prefer the long Iona jetty for the drama, but the Iona Beach Trail itself is quieter and more low-key, good for an easy coastal stroll.

Recent hikers report sandy and muddy sections that creep into your shoes, so waterproof shoes or light boots help a lot, especially if you’re curious and wander off toward the tip at low tide. Mosquitoes can be annoying in warmer months, and the experience changes a lot with the tide, so check it if you’re hoping to walk farther along the beach. Expect some ongoing work and machinery around the facilities and jetty area, lots of birds, the odd pushy crow, and bring a bit of patience if you want that calm Richmond sunset walk without the crowds.
