Trail Description

Spirit Caves Trail in Yale, BC is one of those short hikes that feels like a full workout. At 5.6 km return with about 552 m of gain, it climbs fast and doesn’t really let up, which is why it’s rated difficult and usually takes around 2 hours. The payoff is a big view over the Fraser River and surrounding mountains, plus a look at a few small caves near the top.

The Spirit Caves Trail starts right off the highway near Yale and heads straight into the forest on tight switchbacks. The path is narrow in spots with a drop on one side, loose rock underfoot, and a little creek crossing early on, so you’re watching your feet as much as the scenery. Once you pop out at the main viewpoint, the Fraser River curves below in a wide bend and you get a clear sense of how high you’ve climbed; most hikers say the view easily beats the caves, which are interesting but not the main attraction.

Recent hikers agree this route is steep, slippery when wet, and much tougher on the way down than up, so poles and proper footwear are almost essential. Aim for dry conditions; on rainy days the dirt and shale turn slick and the narrow sections feel extra exposed, especially if you’re not great with heights. The area beyond the mapped Spirit Caves Trail near Yale is poorly marked and turns into bushwhacking, so most people stop at the main viewpoint and rocky cave area, then take their time descending, check for ticks back at the car, and enjoy the fact they got a solid climb done in a relatively short outing.
