Trail Description
Needle Peak Trail off the Coquihalla Summit near Yale, BC is the kind of hike that makes you question your life choices on the way up and brag about them for weeks after. This 8.7 km out-and-back with around 830 m of gain tops out near 2010 m and feels every bit like a true Coast Mountains objective, not a casual stroll. It’s rated difficult for a reason: steep forest, exposed ridge, and a legit scramble to finish.
The route starts with a hard grind through the trees, where you’ll be using roots, branches, and rocks as handholds for the first 40–60 minutes. Once you break out of the forest, the mood changes fast: open ridge walking, big views toward Flatiron, the Coquihalla peaks, and on clear days even Mount Baker. The final push up Needle Peak is where it turns into real scrambling, with chains, boulders, and a few sketchy moves that demand careful hand and foot placement and close attention to the AllTrails line and faint markers.
Right now, recent hikers report the scramble in the last 150–200 m as the crux, with some people turning around at the chain if the exposure feels like too much. Expect it to be just as slow coming down as going up because of the steep, loose sections, and bring gloves if you don’t like grabbing rough rock. The trail is very exposed to sun and often buggy in summer, so pack plenty of water, strong bug spray, and start early; shoulder season and clear fall days are usually more comfortable, but snow and ice can linger at this elevation, so always check conditions before you commit to Needle Peak Trail near Yale.
