Trail Description
Flatiron via Needle Peak Trail is one of the classic grinds off the Coquihalla, just east of Hope near the old Coquihalla Summit, not actually in Yale itself. This 10 km out-and-back with around 852 m of gain earns its “difficult” rating fast, but the payoff is huge: a high alpine plateau, a small lake tucked below Flatiron, and big open views in every direction. Most people take 4–7 hours depending on how far they go and how long they linger at the lake or push on to the summit.
The first kilometre out of the trees is brutally steep, rooty, and technical, and the second keeps you working hard before the trail finally eases off onto open rock and meadows. From there, the Flatiron via Needle Peak Trail rolls over mixed terrain with constant viewpoints, then drops gently toward the lake, with a short, rougher scramble to reach Flatiron’s broad summit plateau. The side trip along Needle Peak ridge is far more exposed and route-findy, with some hands-on moves and “don’t fall here” sections that turn a hike into light scrambling.
Current reports say the trail is well defined to the saddle and lake, but markings thin out higher up and toward Needle, so having a GPS track helps. Expect strong wind and cold temps on the exposed upper sections, even in shoulder season, with snow, ice, and freeze–thaw crust common from late fall through spring; snowshoes or spikes can be needed above treeline. Bring solid footwear, poles for the steep dirt and loose pebbles, at least 2–3 L of water per person since there’s no reliable source until the lake, and full layers if you’re camping, as nights can drop below zero with no fires allowed. Bears do wander the valley below, so pack out your food scraps and stay alert.
