Trail Description

Eaton Lake near Hope, just past Sunshine Valley in British Columbia, is one of those hikes that sounds short on paper and then absolutely kicks your legs on the way up. The stats say 8.7 km return with about 960 m of gain, but most recent GPS tracks put it closer to 9–11.5 km and it feels every bit of “Very Difficult.” It’s steep, relentless, and a real grind, but the waterfalls, forest, and that clear alpine lake at the end make it a classic Fraser Valley suffer-fest in the best way.

The Eaton Lake trail starts off on good tread through mossy forest, quickly pulling you uphill beside a roaring creek and several powerful waterfalls that many people say are the highlight. After the falls, the trail turns into a steady staircase of switchbacks through open forest with blowdown to climb over and roots and rocks underfoot, then flattens out near the basin. At the top, Eaton Lake sits in a rocky bowl with big mountain views, cold swim potential, berries in late summer, and the occasional black bear cruising the shoreline, so keep your head up.

Right now, expect a very steep, very physical hike with lots of deadfall and a couple of sketchy or narrow log bridges near the lake; some are aging and can feel dicey when water is high. The trail is well flagged and generally dry, but trekking poles help a lot on the descent and this route is tough on knees and not ideal for nervous dogs. Bugs come and go by season, with fewer on the way up and more at the lake in peak summer, and the best window for Eaton Lake from Sunshine Valley/Hope is usually June to October, once the snow is gone and the creeks drop a bit.
