Trail Description

Rolley Lake and Falls Loop in Mission is the kind of trail that looks “easy” on paper and then surprises you in real life. The 4.8 km loop with about 159 m of gain starts off as a mellow walk around Rolley Lake, then ramps up once you commit to the falls section. Most people wrap it up in around an hour and a half, but plan extra time if you’re exploring viewpoints or wrangling kids and dogs.

The Rolley Lake loop itself is the highlight for many: clear, well-used paths, tall forest, and lots of peeks at the water, plus quick access to the busy beach and campground area. Once you branch onto the Rolley Falls trail, things get steeper, rougher, and more confusing, with eroded slopes, roots, loose dirt, and some short road and FSR connections that make navigation a bit awkward. The upper and lower falls are a solid reward, but some viewpoints are partly blocked by branches now, and more than a few hikers rely on a downloaded map to avoid wandering down the wrong off-shoot.

Right now, expect bugs, especially mosquitoes, and some overgrown sections on the falls loop where you’ll be pushing through brush and spider webs. The lake loop feels family friendly, but the full Rolley Lake and Falls Loop is better for older kids or adults with decent footwear and comfort on steeper, slippery ground; many locals turn around at the first falls if they’ve got little ones. Cell service is spotty, signage is hit-or-miss, weekends see a packed day-use lot, and after rain some stretches turn into shallow streams, so bring waterproof shoes, download the route, pack bug spray, and treat this “easy” Mission loop with a bit more respect than the stats suggest.
