Trail Description

Nicomen Peak above Mission is a serious grind, not a casual stroll. This 14.8 km out-and-back with about 1,260 m of gain takes most people around 7 hours, and it earns its “Mission’s hardest hike” reputation. If you want a steep, quiet mountain day with Fraser Valley and Mount Baker views and don’t mind some rough trail, this one delivers.

The route to Nicomen Peak starts near Norrish Creek, with a punchy climb, some forest road sections, and then a long, relentless push for the final third. The trail bounces between steep forest, short flat-ish connectors, and then another wall of elevation, with better views as you gain the ridge. Go past the signed summit to the viewpoints for the real payoff: wide looks over the Fraser Valley, Chilliwack valley peaks like Tomyhoi, and a surprisingly wild feel this close to Mission.

Recent hikers report a well-flagged route but warn about sections that are steep, overgrown, and buggy in summer, with mosquitoes and brush making poles awkward in places. Volunteers have done solid work clearing and flagging the upper subalpine, but this still feels like a rough, lightly maintained trail where you may not see anyone all day. Expect snow from around 900 m in late fall through spring, when snowshoes or crampons are smarter than microspikes alone, and aim for spring or fall if you want cooler temps, fewer bugs, and firmer ground. Bring navigation, extra layers, and the mindset for a full-day workout, not a quick Mission viewpoint lap.
