Trail Description
Mount Kettley is one of those Mission-area hikes that doesn’t mess around. This 18.5 km out-and-back with about 1,134 m of gain is rated difficult for good reason, usually taking over 7 hours, but the payoff is serious big-mountain scenery without the crowds.
The trail to Mount Kettley starts in the McConnell Creek backroads zone and climbs steadily through forest before breaking into more open terrain with views toward Robie Reid and Statlu. From the summit, you’re staring straight at Robie Reid and on a clear day you can spot Mount Baker, Slesse, and Tomyhoi way out on the horizon, which makes the long grind feel worth it.
Conditions on Mount Kettley change fast, and Mission’s higher elevations hold snow early and late in the season, so shoulder-season and winter trips are only for people with proper gear and experience. In winter this route becomes technical, with the last 200 m of elevation often requiring a mix of microspikes, snowshoes, crampons, and an ice axe. Plan for a full day, start early, expect blowdown and rough sections, and always check recent reports and access roads before you commit to the drive and the climb.
