Trail Description

Matsqui Lookout in Mission, BC is a short, sharp grind that gives you more workout than the stats suggest. The trail is about 5 km out and back with roughly 275 m of gain, and most of that climbing happens quickly, so expect your legs and lungs to wake up fast. You’re not coming here for a long wander, you’re coming for a quick climb, a couple of solid viewpoints, and then back down.

The Matsqui Lookout trail starts near the train tracks, then heads up through forest with a steady, sometimes very steep grade. There are two main viewpoints with partial Fraser Valley and river views through the trees, plus smaller peekaboo openings along the way that break up the climb. Past the second lookout the route technically continues, but it turns rough, overgrown, and more like a bushwhack than a maintained trail.

Current reports from hikers around Mission say the upper section beyond the second lookout is overgrown with thorny vines, lots of deadfall, and a fully collapsed “slippery bridge,” which is the smart turnaround point. The lower part is still a decent workout, but it’s steep, so bring good footwear, water, and a hiking pole if you have one. Access is touchy here: people mention using the gate after the train tracks and walking through the field when it’s closed, but there are also warnings about this being private property with no public access, so check the latest local info and respect any posted signs before you go.
