Trail Description
Hunter Logging Road Lookout in Mission is one of those hikes you do for the workout, not the grand finale. It’s an 8.2 km out-and-back with about 360 m of gain, usually taking around 2.5 to 3 hours, and it climbs steadily on a wide gravel road the whole way. Think consistent incline, solid cardio, and glimpses of lakes and valley views as you go, but a pretty underwhelming “lookout” at the official end.
The hike itself is straightforward: you’re walking an active logging road, not a forest singletrack. The grade is steady, with the first stretch and final kilometre feeling the steepest, and some loose rock near the top. Reviews are mixed on views; some hikers enjoy the open sightlines along the road, while most agree that the actual Hunter Logging Road Lookout point is blocked by trees and brush, and the trail doesn’t quite reach the true high point.
Right now, conditions on Hunter Logging Road Lookout are hit-or-miss. There have been logging closures right from the parking area, so access can be shut on weekdays and sometimes open on weekends, and you need to obey all posted signs. Expect mosquitoes in a big way in warmer months, especially after rain and in the evening, and the road can get muddy and slick when it’s wet. Parking near the start is limited and technically an emergency turnaround, so arrive early, don’t block traffic, and have a backup hike in Mission in case the gate is closed or operations are active. Bears have been spotted, so bring spray, make noise, and treat this as a no-frills training hike rather than a big-view destination.
