Trail Description

Dewdney Cabin North Trail in Mission, BC is short on distance but big on grind. This 4.2 km out-and-back route climbs over 500 m in a hurry, so expect a very difficult workout rather than a casual forest stroll. Hikers who tackle it usually call it hard but rewarding, thanks to the cabin at the top and the views you earn along the way.

The trail heads straight into the trees and wastes no time gaining elevation, with steady, sometimes punishing grades most of the way. You’ll wind through classic coastal forest, with a few rough sections, roots, and blowdowns to navigate before reaching the Ben von Hardenburg Memorial Cabin around 680 m. On clear days you can catch solid views through the breaks in the trees and around the cabin area, making the climb feel worth the effort.

Recent hikers report the Dewdney Cabin North Trail as a good, well-defined route but definitely steep, with a few snakes spotted along the way and no larger wildlife seen. Expect mud and slick roots after rain, fallen trees to climb over, and plenty of mosquitoes once things warm up, so bring bug spray and decent footwear. Plan around 2.5 hours return if you’re reasonably fit, more if you like breaks, and aim for April to October for the best conditions, starting earlier in the day to avoid heat and crowds on this tough little Mission grind.
