Trail Description

Davis Lake & McDonald Falls near Mission, BC packs a lot into a short 0.8 km out-and-back. The hike drops quickly down to a rugged creek canyon, then spits you out at a quiet lake ringed by dense forest and the hum of campers and ATVs in summer. It’s rated challenging mostly because of the steep, rocky sections, not the distance, so expect a short, punchy workout rather than a mellow stroll.

The trail starts with a steep descent beside McDonald Falls, where Murdo Creek crashes down a series of polished rock steps. Stay close to the falls and you get great views and firmer footing, plus the sound of rushing water the whole way down. At the bottom, Davis Lake can look clear and inviting on cooler days, but reviews are mixed on swimming, with some calling it muddy and better for hanging out on shore than going in.

Recent hikers report the dirt logging road in to Davis Lake & McDonald Falls is fine for regular cars, but watch for fast-moving trucks and park on the left after the bridge. The trail can be slick after rain, with loose gravel and rocks, so wear real hikers or solid trail runners. There is an active yellowjacket ground nest about 100 m down the trail near a fallen tree; take the left fork closer to the falls to avoid it. Summer can get busy with campers and ATVs, while midweek and shoulder seasons are quieter but often wetter and slipperier, so plan your footwear and timing accordingly.
