Trail Description
Cardinalis Peak in Mission, BC is one of those trails that looks straightforward on paper but throws a few surprises at you in real life. The loop is about 8.9 km with 493 m of gain, topping out around 607 m, and is rated moderate, though the navigation issues right now push it closer to challenging for many hikers.
The route starts on a defined path through typical coastal forest, with steady climbing and a few short, steeper sections as you work your way toward the high point. Views are mostly filtered through the trees, but you do get some open sections with glimpses over the Mission area and surrounding hills, plus that satisfying “peak” feeling once you hit the high ground on the Cardinalis Peak loop.
Current reports for Cardinalis Peak are clear: the trail basically disappears just past the halfway mark, and hikers have been stuck bushwhacking for 30 minutes or more without finding the route, often turning back. Right now, treat this as an out-and-back from the start to just before the problem area unless you’re very confident with GPS and off-trail navigation. Go in with a downloaded map, start early, expect slower progress than the suggested 29 minutes, and avoid this loop in low visibility, deep snow, or after heavy rain when route-finding gets even trickier.
