Trail Description

Bear Mountain Loop in Mission, BC is one of those trails that surprises people. On paper it’s a 9 km moderate loop with about 435 m of gain to around 543 m, but in reality it feels like a rugged little adventure tucked into a busy mountain bike park. Expect a mix of forest, logging roads, and bike lines criss-crossing everywhere, with more views and variety than most expect from a “local” hill.

The hiking itself is a steady grind with some steep pulls, rooty sections, and short downhills that let your legs reset. Early on you’ll hear traffic and the nearby gun range, but as you push farther around the Bear Mountain Loop it quiets down into tall trees, mossy ground, and the odd viewpoint that opens up more than you’d think for this altitude. It’s not remote, but it feels wilder the deeper you go, and many people end up wanting to come back and try different lines like Bigguns or other side trails.

Current reports say the trails are well used but navigation is the real challenge, especially where hiking paths meet forest service roads and bike routes. Download the map, keep AllTrails open, and expect confusing junctions, lots of bike-only lines, and almost no signage in spots; this is a mountain bike park first, hiking area second, so stay alert and yield to riders. In winter and shoulder seasons, spikes are strongly recommended for slushy snow and slick roots, and the city sometimes closes sections for weather or forestry, so check Mission trail updates before you go and be ready for rain, snow, or both on the same loop.
