Trail Description

Alder Flats via East Canyon Trail in Golden Ears Provincial Park isn’t about instant views, it’s about a steady, forested climb that pays off only if you push past the flats. This 11.4 km out-and-back near Mission is rated moderate, with about 439 m of gain and an average time of just over three and a half hours, though many people tack on extra time to reach the lookout above Alder Flats. It’s a solid choice if you like classic West Coast forest, rushing creeks, and a cooler, shaded hike on warm days.

The first stretch of the East Canyon Trail is wide, smooth, and easy, following the creek with plenty of chances to step down to the water or rinse off on a hot day. The grade and rocks pick up in the last couple of kilometres as you approach Alder Flats, and most hikers agree the flats themselves are a bit underwhelming with limited views. Keep going past the campsite for another 15–30 minutes to the helicopter pad viewpoint for a proper look at Golden Ears and surrounding peaks, a much better lunch spot than the flats.

Recent hikers report the Alder Flats via East Canyon Trail as well-maintained with only small muddy patches, though it can get wetter and slick after rain and around the creeks, so waterproof or water-resistant shoes help. Bugs show up once things warm up, and the exposed sections near the top can feel hot, so bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen even with the tree cover. Weekdays and cloudy days are quieter, and in summer you usually won’t see snow on this section, but always check current Golden Ears Provincial Park advisories for road access, passes, and any seasonal closures before you go.
