Trail Description
Whippoorwill Point Trail in Harrison Hot Springs looks “easy” on paper, but recent hikers are saying otherwise. The loop to Whippoorwill Point and Sandy Cove is short, close to town, and loaded with lake views, but the rough, unmaintained sections make it feel longer and more demanding than the 3.7 km stat suggests. If you like a bit of adventure and don’t mind hunting for the route, this one delivers.
The walk starts out tame on a paved or well‑defined path from Harrison, then quickly turns into more of a scramble along the lakeshore. Expect rocky, rooty terrain, short but steep climbs and descents, and a few minor cliffy sections where you’ll want your hands free. In return, you get quiet forest, big old cedars, fungi everywhere in the wet season, and a surprisingly lovely sandy beach at Sandy Cove that feels miles away from the resort strip.
Current reports are consistent: Whippoorwill Point Trail is poorly marked, overgrown in places, and closer to moderate–difficult than “easy,” especially in wet fall conditions when leaves make the steep bits slick. People mention loose rocks, downed trees, spider webs, mosquitoes, and some light bushwhacking, plus a short rope section with an alternate way around. Bring proper hiking shoes, poles if you have them, a downloaded map, and extra time; many hikers lose the loop and backtrack. This trail is more enjoyable in late spring through early fall when it’s dry and you can actually linger at the beach, but it can be hiked year‑round if you’re prepared for mud and slippery sections.
