Trail Description
Dyke Road via Athey Road in Harrison is a flat, very easy out-and-back along the river dike that feels more like a quiet country walk than a mountain hike. It’s about 10 km total with barely any elevation gain, so it’s friendly for almost all fitness levels and a solid option if you just want to move your legs and clear your head without working too hard.
The route follows a wide, hard-packed gravel and dirt road through mixed forest with occasional openings where you can peek out over the slough and river. Views are more low-key than dramatic, but the mix of water, trees, and open sky has its own calm vibe, and you can take the odd side path to get closer to the river. With the gentle grade and smooth surface, Dyke Road via Athey Road is popular for walking, jogging, and biking, and the lack of crowds adds to the relaxed feel.
Recent hikers report very light traffic, even on weekends, so don’t count on seeing many other people. Expect bear sign along the trail and the real possibility of actual bears; bring bear spray, make noise, and stay alert, especially around bends in the trees. There are lots of bugs when water levels are high, so pack repellent, and be aware that around 4.4 km the dike becomes accessible to vehicles. You’ll pass a cluster of honey beehives at the trailhead, so move calmly through that area and you’re good to go in most seasons as long as the weather cooperates.
