Trail Description
Sumas Mountain Viewpoint via Lost Lake OHV Road is a solid half‑day outing above Abbotsford, British Columbia, mixing forest road cruising with a punchy climb to a wide open lookout. The route is about 10.9 km out and back with around 423 m of gain, topping out near 779 m, and most hikers land in that moderate range at roughly three and a half hours. It’s popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and off-roaders, so expect some company, but there are still quieter pockets if you start early.
The hike starts from Lost Lake OHV Road, with the trailhead tucked on the right side as you drive in, marked by a pink flagging tape that’s easy to miss if you’re not watching for it. The first 2 km are a steep grind with very few flat breaks, then you connect with a service road that eases off and winds you toward the Sumas Mountain viewpoint; views open to the Fraser Valley and surrounding peaks, best on a clear, sunny day. Around Chadsey Lake the path can feel a bit overgrown, but the mix of forest, lake, and ridge walking keeps things interesting the whole way.
Recent hikers report the Sumas Mountain Viewpoint via Lost Lake OHV Road is well managed overall, with good orange markers once you’re past the initial, more confusing section, so downloading a map beforehand is smart. The trail can be overgrown in spots and muddy or slick after rain, and there’s often lingering snow near the top in shoulder seasons, so waterproof footwear and poles help. Families do bring kids and even babies on this route, but the steep start and mixed OHV traffic mean it feels best from April to November in dry weather, with extra time padded in if you plan to explore side trails or hang out at the viewpoint.
