Trail Description
Matsqui Trail in Abbotsford, BC is a long, flat grind in the best way. This 20.4 km out-and-back along the Fraser River is more about steady movement than big views or elevation, which makes it a go-to for runners, dog walkers, and anyone looking to log easy miles without driving into the mountains.
The route follows the Matsqui dyke on a wide, flat mix of dirt and gravel, with open sky, farm fields, and river glimpses keeping things interesting. With only about 60 m of total gain and a max elevation around 17 m, it’s more of a power walk than a hike, and most people wrap it up in just under four hours if they’re doing the full distance.
Recent reports mention the east side of the Matsqui dyke having a washed-out section in the last 2.5 km, so be ready to turn around earlier if needed. The trail has been dry and dusty, great for staying out of the mud, but the mosquitoes are brutal if you stop in the shade, so bring spray and keep moving. Matsqui Trail is usable year-round, but it’s far more comfortable in the cooler parts of the day before the sun heats up that exposed gravel.
