Trail Description
Long Way Home in Abbotsford, BC is a solid choice if you want a steady workout in the forest without committing to a full-day grind. This 9.3 km out-and-back gains about 458 m and usually takes just over 3 hours, landing it firmly in the moderate category. It’s a quieter trail than the big-name Abbotsford hikes, so you’ll likely get long stretches with just your own footsteps and the birds.
The trail climbs through classic coastal forest, with mossy sections, roots, and a few punchy, steep stretches that will get your legs and lungs going. Views are limited along most of Long Way Home, and even at the high point around 403 m you’re mostly getting a partial, mediocre outlook and a cell tower rather than a big panoramic payoff. The real draw here is the peaceful, shaded forest and the feeling of being away from the city while still close to Abbotsford.
Recent hikers mention that Long Way Home is not very well marked in spots, so downloading a map or GPS track before you go is smart, especially for first-timers. Expect some very steep sections, so good footwear and a reasonable fitness level help, and be ready for lots of mosquitoes in season—bug spray isn’t optional. The trail is generally good from spring through fall, with March to October offering the best conditions, but shoulder seasons can bring mud, so plan your gear and timing accordingly.
