Trail Description

The Lazy Boy, Tools of the Trade, and Ranch Climb Loop on McKee Peak in Abbotsford is a compact forest workout with a bit of everything in just 3.4 km. It’s rated easy on paper, but expect real hiking with 144 m of gain, short steeper sections, and uneven roots and rocks. Most people wrap it up in about an hour, making it a solid after-work or weekend leg-stretcher close to town.

Once you’re in the trees, the loop feels quiet and surprisingly wild for being right above Abbotsford. The route winds through dense green forest, crosses a maze of intersecting trails and bike lines, and pops out at a few viewpoints with glimpses of the valley below and surrounding mountains. There are some fun ups and downs, a small lookout, and side paths that lead to features like rock caves if you manage to stay on track.

Recent hikers say navigation is the real challenge on the Lazy Boy, Tools of the Trade, and Ranch Climb Loop, so download a digital map and keep it open; it’s easy to drift onto bike trails or miss junctions even with an app. Expect mud and standing water in the wetter months, with dry, dusty tread making some descents loose when it hasn’t rained, so waterproof or grippy shoes are smart. The trail is generally well maintained but can be overgrown in spots, and there’s been plenty of bear scat reported, so make noise, keep dogs close or leashed, and treat this as a short but genuine hike rather than a casual stroll.
