Trail Description
Downes Bowl Trail in Abbotsford, BC is one of those “in-town but feels out of town” loops that locals use when they want a quick forest fix without driving into the mountains. This 4.3 km loop has just 85 m of gain, takes around an hour, and is rated very easy, but it still gives you enough rolling hills to feel like you actually went for a hike. It’s a solid choice for a short after-work walk, a dog walk, or easing into hiking season.
The loop drops you down into the bowl right away, then winds through a cool, green forest with a mix of curves, short climbs, and mellow flats. You’ll cross a series of small bridges, pass a few fallen trees, and then work your way back up to the top of the bowl, popping out near where you started. Views are mostly forested rather than wide-open scenery, but it’s quiet, peaceful, and you might spot birds or even the odd owl if you’re lucky.
Recent hikers say the Downes Bowl Trail is well maintained but poorly marked, with lots of bike spurs and forks, so have a GPS map or app open and don’t just wing it. The area can get wet and muddy in fall and winter, though it usually avoids serious flooding, and it’s walkable year-round thanks to the low elevation. Expect busier parking and more people as summer hits, keep dogs leashed, and be ready for a few surprise hills hidden in what looks like a simple city loop.
