Trail Description

The Dead Reckoning, Junkyard Zombie, Hidden Valley and Federau loop in Abbotsford, BC is one of those short hikes that surprises you. It’s only about 4 km with 206 m of gain, but you still earn views over the valley that feel way bigger than the stats suggest. Most people finish it in around an hour and a half, so it’s easy to squeeze into a morning or after-work window.

The trail winds up a network of mountain biking routes, so expect smooth, flowing grades, banked corners, and the odd confusing junction. You’ll want a map handy, because the paths split a few times and it’s easy to wander onto the wrong line. As you climb toward roughly 468 m, gaps in the trees open up to wide views to the north, west, and south over Abbotsford and the surrounding valley, which is what keeps locals coming back.

Recent hikers report the loop as easy overall, but with enough incline to feel like a workout, especially for less regular hikers. In colder spells the packed sections can freeze solid, so microspikes help on the slick bits; when it’s warmer, those same hard-packed stretches can be greasy after rain. The route is usually dry or just a bit soggy in spots, bugs are generally mild but mosquitos do show up in season, and because this is a true mountain biking zone, stay alert, share the trail, and keep your phone or GPS handy so you stay on the Dead Reckoning, Junkyard Zombie, Hidden Valley and Federau loop you actually came for.
