Trail Description
Chadsey Lake Trail and Sumas Mountain sits above Abbotsford and packs more punch than the stats suggest. The 8.7 km out-and-back sounds like a mellow moderate, but that only really applies if you stop at Chadsey Lake. Push on to the Sumas Mountain lookout and it turns into a steep, exposed grind that can feel tough even for regular hikers.
The hike starts from a rough but manageable forest service road, then climbs through classic coastal forest with roots, rocks, and a few muddy stretches almost any time of year. Chadsey Lake is a calm little stop, sometimes frozen in winter, with the north side offering the clearer path. From there the trail to the Sumas summit and eastern lookout gets steeper and more technical, but the reward is wide open views over Abbotsford, the Fraser River, and across to Chilliwack.
Recent reports mention mud, fallen trees, and a few confusing junctions, so download a map and pay attention to signs, especially on the way back. The south side of the lake loop is overgrown and not worth the hassle; stick to the north side and then head up to the lookout if you’re comfortable with exposure and drop-offs. Expect light snow and ice near the top in winter and early spring, and bring good tread and maybe microspikes in the colder months. The road to the upper parking area is bumpy but usually fine for a careful sedan or SUV, and the trail runs pretty quiet compared to other Lower Mainland hikes, making Chadsey Lake Trail and Sumas Mountain a solid choice if you want a tougher, less crowded Abbotsford climb.
