Trail Description

Departing directly from the Red Mountain base area at roughly 1,190 metres above sea level, the trail introduces hikers to the expansive ski terrain of the Rossland Range. This out-and-back route climbs 428 vertical metres over 8.5 kilometres, taking advantage of open service roads and mountain tracks that ascend the lower and mid-mountain slopes. The trail begins with gentle to moderate grades, guiding you away from the resort village and into subalpine glades and open ski bowls.

As you gain elevation, the trail winds past several chairlift mid-stations and intersects regional singletrack routes. Open cut-blocks provide unimpeded sightlines to Granite Mountain, Grey Mountain, and the rolling ridgelines of the Monashee sub-ranges. During mid-summer, the surrounding clearings burst with vibrant lupine, paintbrush, and fireweed. The turnaround point situated high on the mountain offers a wide panoramic vista across the town of Rossland nestled below, before you retrace your steps along the same track back to the base.

Because the route travels across open ski terrain, sun exposure is significant during warm summer days; carrying plenty of water and sun protection is essential. The trail surface consists primarily of packed dirt, loose shale, and gravel service roads where sturdy hiking footwear will provide needed traction on the descent. Always yield to downhill mountain bikers and keep pets leashed to respect both passing cyclists and local wildlife such as black bears and mule deer.
