Trail Description

A Walk in the Past is a 2.6 km out & back hiking route located in Field, British Columbia, featuring a moderate difficulty rating and an elevation gain of +111 m. The path winds through a dense sub-alpine forest dominated by mature conifers, utilizing packed soil, rock-armoured switchbacks, and root-laced singletrack to navigate the rugged valley slope. Hikers encounter a steady, sustained climb right from the trailhead, making foot placement critical as the route ascends away from the valley floor.

As the trail progresses up the slope, it intersects with historical relics and interpretive markers that highlight the area's rich railway and mountaineering heritage. Openings in the dense forest canopy provide striking glimpses across the Kicking Horse River valley toward the towering limestone peaks of the Canadian Rockies. The high point of the route serves as a natural vantage point, offering clear sightlines over the surrounding mountain terrain before the return descent along the same path.

Trailhead access for A Walk in the Past is conveniently located near the community of Field within Yoho National Park, just off the Trans-Canada Highway. The parking area is easily reached via paved roads and is fully accessible by standard 2WD vehicles. The optimal seasonal window for this hike runs from late June through early October, once winter snowpacks recede and before autumn alpine weather sets in.
