Trail Description
Emerald Triangle is a demanding full-day circuit above Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park near Field. It combines lower-elevation forest and lakeside scenery with a high mountain traverse around Yoho Pass and Burgess Pass. Allow approximately eight hours for the estimated 20-km loop, with additional time for breaks and mountain conditions.
From the Emerald Lake day-use area, use the lakeside trail to reach the signed approach toward Yoho Pass. The mountain circuit links the Yoho Pass approach, the traverse beneath Wapta Mountain, and Burgess Pass before descending toward Emerald Lake. These are route-orientation landmarks rather than verified turn-by-turn instructions; consult a current Parks Canada trail map and carry an offline topographic map before committing to the circuit.
Plan for sustained climbing, uneven footing, roots on forested sections, and possible lingering snow in higher terrain. The usual hiking window depends on snowmelt and autumn weather rather than fixed calendar dates. Carry sturdy footwear, waterproof and insulating layers, food, water treatment, navigation equipment, and bear spray that you know how to use. Check Parks Canada trail reports, wildlife restrictions, and the weather forecast before departure.
