Trail Description

Triangle Lake Trail in Halfmoon Bay is a classic Sunshine Coast forest loop: 7.1 km, easy grade, and just enough elevation to feel like a real hike without being a slog. The loop winds through mature coastal forest to a modest high point around 216 m, then drops back toward Triangle Lake, making it a solid 2-hour outing for most people. It’s popular with locals for a quick escape into the trees, with families, casual hikers, and dog walkers all sharing the path.

The walking itself is mostly gentle, with rolling ups and downs, some roots, rocks, and the odd puddle to keep things interesting. You’ll move through lush, mossy forest with twists and turns, gullies, and small streams, with filtered light and that classic damp-cedar smell. There are a few side trails, including links toward Little Knives and viewpoints, so having a map handy helps you stay on the Triangle Lake Trail loop and avoid adding surprise distance.

Recent hikers report a handful of downed trees you’ll need to step over or around, plus some sections that are overgrown enough to scratch up bare legs, so skip the shorts if you can. Expect mud, puddles, and slick rocks in the wet months, and the odd dusting of snow in winter, but the trail is usable year-round with decent footwear. This is bear country and there’s been a black bear circling the Triangle Lake area, so travel in a group if possible, make noise, leash your dog, and pack out everything you bring in.
