Trail Description
Tic Tac Toe - Lena - Pterodactyl is a short but surprisingly punchy loop tucked above Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast. On paper it looks mellow at 3.9 km with only 59 m of gain and a max altitude around 131 m, but locals know this one rides and hikes more like an intermediate trail, especially if you’re linking it at speed with the HMB group.
The loop winds through classic coastal forest, with a mix of smooth sections and more technical roots and rocks that keep you on your toes. It’s popular with mountain bikers, so hikers should stay aware on the narrower stretches, but traffic is usually light enough that you can move at your own pace and enjoy the quiet woods and filtered ocean air from nearby Halfmoon Bay.
Recent reports say Tic Tac Toe - Lena - Pterodactyl is decently dry even after rain, though the lack of clear markings can make navigation tricky if you’re new to the area. Download a map or use a GPS app before you head out, and don’t rely on signage alone. The loop is open year-round and usually takes under an hour, but treat it like an intermediate outing: sturdy shoes, a bit of route sense, and extra time if conditions are wet or you’re still learning the network.
