Trail Description

Smuggler Cove in Halfmoon Bay is one of those Sunshine Coast walks that feels way bigger than its stats. This 4.3 km out-and-back trail only climbs about 87 m and tops out around 34 m, so it’s very easy by hiking standards and usually takes just over an hour. Most people end up staying longer because the coves, clear water, and rocky shoreline are hard to walk away from.

The first stretch of the Smuggler Cove trail is mostly wide, flat boardwalk through marsh and wetlands, with interpretive signs, beaver lodges, and birds like herons if you’re lucky. After about a kilometre it shifts to more natural tread with roots, rocks, and short, slightly steeper bits, but nothing technical for most walkers. You get a mix of quiet inlets, big-boat views out in the cove, and open ocean lookouts, plus plenty of side spurs to scramble onto sun-warmed rock, watch eagles, or slip into that transparent blue water for a swim or paddle.

Right now, plan around crowds and logistics more than difficulty. Smuggler Cove Provincial Park has a small parking lot that fills fast, and cars line the road on busy days; washrooms are basic and can have a lineup. The boardwalk is generally in good shape, but the park has announced a closure from the week of September 15, 2025, to November 30, 2025, for boardwalk upkeep, so check dates before you go. Expect a busy, slightly touristy vibe in peak season, bring sandals or water shoes for the barnacley rocks if you’re swimming, keep dogs leashed, and aim for shoulder seasons or later afternoons for a quieter Halfmoon Bay coastal wander.
