Trail Description

Smuggler Cove South Viewpoint in Halfmoon Bay is one of those short Sunshine Coast walks that seriously over-delivers. This 2.7 km out-and-back trail is wide, easy, and mostly flat, with only about 54 m of gain, so just about anyone can handle it in around 40 minutes. You’re heading out to low coastal bluffs and quiet coves, not a summit, so it’s all about ocean atmosphere rather than big climbs.

The walk to the viewpoint moves through classic coastal forest, then opens up to wetlands and original swamps with boardwalk-style sections and lots of vegetation variety. As you get closer to the water, the trail gets rougher, with more roots and rocks to scramble over, but it’s short and manageable if you take your time. Down at Smuggler Cove South Viewpoint, you’ll find calm inlets, rocky ledges, and access to three small beaches where people sunbathe, swim, or just sit and watch boats and seabirds.

Recent hikers say the trail is well maintained, popular, and mostly covered by trees, so light rain isn’t a big deal. Families, older walkers, and casual hikers do well here, but anyone with balance issues should be careful near the shoreline sections where it’s more uneven. Go at lower tide if you want more beach to explore, bring shoes you don’t mind getting damp around the coves, and expect company on weekends and holidays, as this Halfmoon Bay gem is a must-see stop on the Sunshine Coast year-round.
