Trail Description

Shakecutters - VFR - Summer Trail is a relaxed 6.6 km loop tucked inland from Halfmoon Bay, starting from the Big Tree Recreation Site rather than the misleading Leaning Tree Road pin many maps show. With only 228 m of gain and a high point around 413 m, it’s an easy route time-wise and effort-wise, usually wrapped up in about two hours, but still feels like a proper Sunshine Coast forest outing.

Once you’re on the Shakecutters - VFR - Summer Trail, you’re in classic Halfmoon Bay woods right away: tall second-growth giants, soft forest floor, and a cool, shaded feel even on warmer days. The route links Big Tree Trail and other side paths, so it’s fun to explore variations or cut things short before the lake if you want, as long as you keep an eye on your map. Views are more about big trees, moss, and quiet than big mountain panoramas, though there are some nice open spots and a “cool view” or two along the way.

Recent hikers say the biggest challenge isn’t the terrain, it’s the directions, so ignore GPS instructions to Learning/Lean Tree Road and instead drive the highway until you see the Big Tree Recreation and Hiking sign, then take the sharp unmarked right and follow the “3k to Big Tree Recreation” sign. Expect some muddy and wet sections, especially after rain or in shoulder seasons, so waterproof shoes are a good idea. The Shakecutters - VFR - Summer Trail near Halfmoon Bay is hikeable year-round, but conditions swing from slick and soggy in winter to dry and fast in summer, so plan your footwear and layers to match the season.
