Trail Description
Big Tree Road – Beaver Pond – Easy Street – Neimja – Locomotive is a mellow forest loop in Halfmoon Bay, just inland from Welcome Beach on the Sunshine Coast. At 8.9 km with about 223 m of gain and a high point around 405 m, it’s an easy loop that most walkers finish in roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes. It’s a solid choice if you want a longer outing without a big grind, close to the highway but quickly feeling away from it all.
The loop starts from Big Tree Access Road off the Sunshine Coast Highway, with a small parking area just before the trailhead. Once you’re on the Big Tree Road section, you’re into classic coastal forest: tall second-growth trees, soft dirt, and the occasional rocky or rooty patch as you work your way past Beaver Pond, along Easy Street, and around Neimja and Locomotive. Views are mostly about the forest itself rather than big panoramas, so this is more of a “head-clearing walk in the woods” than a viewpoint mission.
Recent hikers describe Big Tree Road – Beaver Pond – Easy Street – Neimja – Locomotive as well worth downloading a map for, because there are a lot of side trails and old roads that can confuse first-timers. The loop is open year-round and sees hikers, mountain bikers, and snowshoers in winter, so expect some mud, puddles, and occasional slick rocks after rain or snow. Dogs are allowed on leash; bring decent footwear, keep an eye on junctions, and you’ll have a relaxed forest loop that shows off the quieter side of Halfmoon Bay.
