Trail Description

Big Tree, Addernach, Lee's Big Easy, 4D, and Shakecutter's Loop is a mellow forest ramble in the hills above Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast. The loop is about 4.5 km with 156 m of gain, topping out around 275 m, so it feels more like a steady stroll than a grind, and most people wrap it up in about an hour and twenty. It’s a good choice if you want an easy leg-stretcher away from the crowds but still want that classic coastal forest feel.

The trail winds through second-growth forest with some impressively big trees still standing, mixed with sections of older logging road and smooth singletrack. Grades are gentle, and the loop flows well, linking Big Tree, Addernach, Lee’s Big Easy, 4D, and Shakecutter’s into one continuous circuit, so you’re rarely on anything steep or technical. You’ll get filtered light through the canopy, mossy trunks, and that damp, quiet Sunshine Coast atmosphere rather than big viewpoints, making it a relaxed, head-clearing walk.

Recent hikers on Big Tree, Addernach, Lee's Big Easy, 4D, and Shakecutter's Loop report that even after three days of rain the route had only a few puddles and wasn’t overly muddy, but waterproof shoes are still a good idea. You may see or hear a few mountain bikes near the start and end of the loop and occasionally hear whistles from riders or workers in the area, so keep dogs close and leashed as required. This Halfmoon Bay loop is hikeable most of the year; expect wetter ground and more standing water in fall and winter, with the driest and easiest conditions usually from March through late summer.
