Trail Description

Whiskey Pond via UBC Malcolm Knapp Forest is a quiet, low-key loop in Maple Ridge that trades big views for easy forest miles and a bit of logging history. At 12.7 km with about 324 m of gain and a high point around 385 m, it’s an easy route for anyone comfortable with a few hours on their feet, and it usually takes just over three hours to complete. Expect a mellow day more about distance and forest atmosphere than dramatic scenery.

The loop is mostly on wide gravel and old forest service roads, with stretches of shade, a small waterfall early on, and a calm lake in the middle that you can actually reach by car from Golden Ears if you just want the water. Walking it as mapped, Whiskey Pond via UBC Malcolm Knapp Forest feels like a wander through working forest, with old logging relics and junctions that make you pay a bit of attention to navigation. There’s no real lookout, but the appeal is the quiet, the space to move, and the steady, easy grade.

Recent hikers report the trail is generally well maintained and straightforward, though signage gets a bit vague northwest of Mike Lake and it’s easy to drift off route if you’re not watching your map. The Mike Lake section can be very muddy after rain, while the more open gravel stretches get hot and buggy in the sun, with flies and some mosquitoes, so bring repellent and decent footwear. This Maple Ridge loop is hikeable year-round, but shoulder seasons and cooler days are most comfortable; leave the dog at home, as UBC Malcolm Knapp Forest does not allow pets on the trails.
