Trail Description
West Canyon and Evan's Creek Trail in Maple Ridge is one of those Golden Ears hikes that feels like real backcountry without eating your whole day. At 6.9 km out and back with about 326 m of gain, it’s rated moderate, but the rocky sections and creek crossings make it feel like a bit more of an adventure than the stats suggest.
You start on the busy West Canyon Trail, then peel off at the second bridge onto the Evan's Creek Trail, where the crowds thin and it gets quieter fast. The route runs roughly parallel to Evans Creek, with steady ups and downs, roots, and then a long stretch of boulder and rock “river bed” near the end that’s more of a scramble than a walk, but rewards you with solid valley and creek views well before the official end.
Recent hikers report clear snow-free trail and easy-to-follow singletrack, but note a few washouts, slick rocks, and a fast-moving creek that currently blocks access to the true endpoint and snow caves for many people. Expect it to be very slippery in the rain, and plan extra time if you want to push into the rockier upper section; many turn around a kilometre early and still feel satisfied. West Canyon and Evan's Creek Trail is best from April to October, but always check Golden Ears road closures, wear waterproof shoes with good grip, and be ready to adjust your turnaround point based on water levels and weather.
