Trail Description
UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest Green Trail in Maple Ridge is a short, relaxed loop that feels more like a quiet forest wander than a workout. At just 3.1 km with about 56 m of gain, it’s very easy and usually done in under an hour, making it a solid choice for families or a quick leg-stretcher. Parking is straightforward, and the research forest setting adds a bit of “outdoor classroom” feel with info about local forest and earth history.
The Green Trail loops through classic coastal forest, with the best scenery in the first third as you follow a stream and listen to the water. Expect tall trees, mossy ground, and the chance to spot birds like woodpeckers if you slow down and look up. Once you leave the creek, the path widens and smooths out, turning into an easy cruise back toward the trailhead.
Recent hikers report the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest Green Trail as well maintained overall, but a bit overgrown in places, especially along the ravine and near the river, so kids may find a few sections “jungle-y.” There have been bear sightings near the start and by the ravine, so bring a horn or bear spray, make noise, and be ready to turn around if wildlife is on the trail. The loop is open year-round and works well as a mellow Christmas Day walk or a quick 4K morning start, but after storms you may encounter fallen trees and light bushwhacking, so good shoes and a bit of patience help.
