Trail Description

Spur I and Ferret Loop in Maple Ridge is a short, easy loop that feels more like a sneaky wander through a bike park than a classic hiking trail. At 5.3 km with about 214 m of gain, it’s mellow in terms of fitness, but you do need to stay alert because this area is part of the Blue Mountain riding network. It usually takes around 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace, with lots of time to look around and figure out the maze of side trails.

The loop winds through dense second-growth forest, so expect soft dirt, roots, and a steady green tunnel most of the way. Views are limited, but the quiet, shaded forest and rolling terrain give it a calm, low-key feel when motorized traffic is light. The route is generally easy to follow, though there are a few turns where it helps to keep an eye on your map or GPS so you actually stay on Spur I and Ferret Loop and don’t drift onto other bike lines.

Current reports say the trail is easy to follow but can feel very dark under the trees, which is why hikers tend to prefer Spur I and Ferret Loop in spring and summer when daylight is longer and the ground is less slick. This is a BMX and off-road motorcycle zone first, so expect bikes and ride noise, move off the trail when you hear them coming, and don’t wear headphones. Go with good light, tell someone your plan, and treat this as a shoulder-season or summer forest wander rather than a prime Maple Ridge hiking destination.
